The City of Mason operates under a Council / Manager form of government, as decreed by the Charter of the Municipality of Mason. This charter became law on December 1, 1969, after being approved by voters in November 1969.
Under Mason's Council / Manager plan, a City Council comprised of seven elected citizens reviews and authorizes legislation, sets policy for the city, and hires a City Manager to administer the day-to-day operations of the city and to implement the policies enacted by City Council. Members of Council serve four-year terms. The Mayor and Vice Mayor are elected by Council from among its members to serve two-year terms. The Mayor presides over Council meetings and performs ceremonial civic duties.
The City Manager ensures that all laws and ordinances governing the City of Mason are enforced, directs and supervises all administrative offices, prepares the annual budget, executes all contracts and agreements and attends all City Council meetings. To help the City Manager carry out these duties, related job duties are assigned to different departments within the city, each with its own department head.
In addition to the City Manager, City Council also hires a Clerk and a Law Director. The Clerk records the minutes of Council meetings, which are available to the public upon request, and maintains the official records of city business. The Law Director is the legal advisor and attorney for the City and municipal departments.
